M M G Stables’ El Areeb defeated nine rivals and notched his fourth consecutive victory in the G3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack Feb. 4.
Ridden by jockey Trevor McCarthy, he was sent off as the 1-2 favorite in the $250,000 race. The strong favoritism was due to the 3-year-old of Exchange Rate’s 11 ¼-length score in the G2 Jerome Stakes on Jan. 2.
In the Withers, El Areeb finished 4 1/4 lengths in front in 1:44.47 on a fast track. He now has 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard.
“He made his (sixth) start today, he’s got a good enough foundation there. He’s got another 10 (Road to the Kentucky Derby) points,” trainer Cathal Lynch said. “If we’re going to take a shot at these other three things (the Triple Crown), it’d probably be nice to have a little break before we do.”
The colt is one of several successful racing prospects Glenn Brok of Diamond B has purchased on behalf of M M G Stables.
Brok bought El Areeb for $340,000 under the M M G name at the 2016 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March sale of 2-year-olds in training, where he was consigned by Eisaman Equine, agent.
El Areeb was bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Farms out of the A.P. Indy mare Feathered Diamond.
